Interesting. I like that everything (well almost everything) is connected within this image and the illusion of depth. But…What I REALLY like about this image is that for some unknown reason it reminds me of a board game I used to love to play as a child.

I have discovered over the past 6 months that I love paper more than the average person. In fact my enjoyment in learning about paper is much akin to learning about a favorite superhero. I love to learn about it’s humble back story and humble upbringing: ”Once mere grain of rice through ancient expertise this paper has become kitakata printing paper,” enjoying it’s super powers, “Wow, this BFK is SO absorbent,” and finally discovering it’s kryptonite “What do mean newsprint isn’t acid-free?” If you think about it, a fresh sheet of paper really does have as much potential to change the world as the superheroes we draw on them.

That is why when come across banks of paper knowledge in an easy to understand format, such as on the Neenah website, it is hard not to get a bit giddy.

A fantastic friend once sent me a hand pressed card from Bird Dog, a wonderful upstart outside of Boulder, CO. The card stuck in my mind not just because of the great design work but also because of the quality and craft with which it was made. Letterpress is definitely an aspect of design I would like to learn more about.

This past week I was reading about this famous anecdote about Fredric Goudy’s 1936 acceptance of an award in type design in which he compared “black letter” to stealing sheep; black letter being in his perspective unoriginal. This caused me to think more about the changes in type over time. In looking at font used in the early part of the twentieth century in comparison with their more modern counterparts, think Goudy Old Style verses Calibri, it is possible to see typography as an indicator of greater social and cultural change. One might argue that our movement towards sans serf fonts is the written equivalent to the advent of business casual.
